The Psychology of Retention: Why Progress Matters in Your Membership
Your members don’t leave because they dislike your program—they leave because they aren’t seeing results. Lack of progress leads to cancellations, lower retention, and reduced revenue.
But what if there was a way to keep members engaged, motivated, and moving forward so they stay longer and rave about your membership?
I created the Progress Wheel Framework, a psychology-backed system designed to help your members stay motivated, make consistent progress, and stick around for the long haul. Here’s how it works.
Why Progress, Not Engagement, Drives Retention
Many memberships focus on engagement metrics like comments and likes. While these look good on the surface, they don’t always translate to progress for your members.
Without progress, members lose motivation, leading to cancellations and higher churn.
When retention drops, your member lifetime value (LTV) tanks.
But when members feel momentum:
They stay longer.
They share their results with others.
They become loyal advocates for your membership.
To keep members, focus on helping them make progress—not just participate.
The Progress Wheel Framework
The Progress Wheel Framework helps you craft an experience that keeps members moving forward, all while being rooted in psychology. Here are the five key steps:
1. Purpose
Why It Matters: Members need a clear reason to stay. Research on intrinsic motivation shows that people are more likely to stick with something when they understand why it matters to them.
What to Do:
Help members connect with their purpose.
Remind them how your program aligns with their goals.
In my Community Cultivated Framework, I emphasize “cause”—keeping members connected to their specific purpose.
2. Path
Why It Matters: Without direction, members feel stuck or overwhelmed. Clear milestones give them a roadmap to success.
What to Do:
Goal-setting theory tells us that breaking big goals into smaller, manageable steps increases motivation and the likelihood of success.
Show members their next step, just like Dorothy’s yellow brick road to Oz. Make it clear, achievable, and actionable.
3. Action
Why It Matters: Action bridges the gap between intention and progress. The easier the steps, the more likely members are to take them.
What to Do:
The Fogg Behavior Model shows that clear, simple actions increase follow-through.
Equip members with tools, templates, or step-by-step instructions.
Reduce friction to make taking action simple.
4. Progress
Why It Matters: Members don’t want to wait for big wins to feel progress. Recognizing small wins is critical for sustaining motivation.
What to Do:
The Progress Principle reminds us that recognizing small wins is critical for sustaining motivation.
Help members recognize their progress, whether completing a module or hitting a milestone.
Remind them their efforts are paying off.
5. Spotlight
Why It Matters: Recognition reinforces motivation and creates momentum. Social reinforcement also taps into members’ need for belonging.
What to Do:
Highlight wins privately through direct messages or publicly in live calls or newsletters.
Spotlight achievements big and small to reinforce their value and motivate others.
Tie progress back to the member’s purpose to acknowledge how their progress is getting them closer to their ultimate goal.
How the Progress Wheel Unlocks Membership Growth
When you implement the Progress Wheel Framework:
Progress feeds engagement: Members want to participate more because they see the value in your program.
Results lead to retention: When members make progress, they stay longer.
Results drive referrals: Happy members create testimonials and case studies, increasing conversions.
Retention boosts revenue: Increased LTV means sustainable growth for your membership.
